It might be expected that Maine, as one of the northern most states in the country, would also be one of the coldest. Although the winters can get cold, the climate is still regarded as being humid continental. This means warm summers and cold winters. The areas of the state that are bordered by the Atlantic Ocean are typically regulated by the body of water. The northern region of Maine can experience a large volume of snow during the winter. However, hurricanes and other storms are rare in the state. The entire state only sees an average of 20 thunderstorms each year. The only major highway in Maine is Interstate 95 which runs from the southern border in Portsmouth to New Brunswick, Canada. State highways 1 and 201 also allow fast auto shipping along the Atlantic coast and North to Quebec, Canada. Most larger cities are located along the Atlantic coast, especially along Interstate 95. The large network of lakes and national forests can sometimes cause mild delays in traffic but are not generally known to pose any more problems than in other humid continental states.
