Virginia has often been ranked as having one of the most effective state governments in the country. This is great news for auto shippers as the state regularly maintains local and state roads to a high standard of quality. Also of note for auto shippers in Virginia is the vast difference in average temperatures from winter to summer and throughout the five geographical regions of the state. On average, winter temperatures are around 26 degrees F in January and 86 degrees F in July. The southeastern part of Virginia is normally regulated by the Gulf Stream and tends to remain quite moderate throughout the year.

However, there are other risks that can cause problems for auto shipping companies on the Atlantic coastline. Hurricanes can strike the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and cause damage even far inland in the state. Some hurricanes result in flash floods that can close roads for days at a time. In the western portion of Virginia, thunderstorms are known to occur about 45 days each year. Virginia is known for an average of 7 tornadoes each year but the majority are never stronger than F2.
